Most small business owners know their website needs SEO work. They just don't know what to fix.
You can spend $200 on an SEO audit tool. Or you can use a free checker, get your score in 10 seconds, and know exactly what to fix — for free.
I built a free SEO checker as part of SEO Spark. It runs 8 on-page checks instantly. Here's what it looks for and why each one matters.
What a Free SEO Checker Looks At
1. Title Tag (20% of your score)
The title tag is the first thing people see in Google search results. If it's missing or badly written, nobody clicks — no matter how good your content is.
Good: "Emergency Plumber Chicago — 24/7 Service | Company Name"
Bad: "Home" or missing title entirely.
Keep it between 50-60 characters. Put your keyword near the beginning.
2. Meta Description (15% of your score)
The meta description is the text snippet under your title in search results. It doesn't directly affect rankings, but it dramatically affects whether people click.
A good meta description is 150-160 characters, includes your keyword, and gives someone a reason to click. Think of it as a mini-ad for your page.
3. Heading Structure (15% of your score)
Every page should have exactly one H1 tag. Google uses it to understand what your page is about. Multiple H1s confuse the algorithm.
Your H2 and H3 tags should break up the content into logical sections. Think of it like chapter titles in a book.
4. Word Count (15% of your score)
Google prefers comprehensive content. Pages under 300 words rarely rank. Pages between 800-1500 words have the best chance, assuming the content is actually useful.
But don't pad the word count with fluff. Google's algorithm is good at detecting that. Write as much as you need to fully answer the question — no more, no less.
5. Image Alt Text (10% of your score)
Every image on your site should have descriptive alt text. This helps Google Images send you traffic (yes, Google Images is a search engine too), and it improves accessibility for visually impaired users.
"red-leather-office-chair.jpg" is not alt text.
"Red leather office chair with adjustable armrests and lumbar support" is alt text.
6. Internal & External Links
Links are how Google discovers your pages. Pages with no links pointing to them are called "orphan pages" — Google often ignores them entirely.
External links to reputable sources show Google you've done your research. Internal links help Google understand your site structure.

What If Your Score Is Low?
Most small business websites score between 40-60 on their first check. That's normal. The good news: most fixes are simple.
Missing title tag? Add one. Takes 2 minutes.
No meta description? Write one. Takes 3 minutes.
Too few words? Write more content. This is the hard part.
This is exactly why I built SEO Spark. It writes comprehensive, SEO-optimized blog posts in 60 seconds — so you can fix that word count issue without spending 3 hours per article.
